The Edinburgh International Book Festival is the largest of its kind in the world. It takes place in Charlotte Square in Edinburgh in August each year. As well as books being bought and sold, there are also talks, debates, workshops and book signings at the location. It also envelopes a dedicated series of events for children. In fact there are over 700 individual events within the Book Festival.

The festival began in 1983 as a bi-annual event, growing popularity saw a switch to an annual calendar in 1997. The popularity of the festival continues to grow, and it was even attributed in part to Edinburgh being awarded the title ‘City of Literature’ by UNESCO in 2004.
