National Portrait Gallery of Scotland

The National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh holds the mantle of being the first purpose built portrait gallery in the world. It was first opened in 1889 and has since welcomed visitors from around the globe.

On April 6th 2009 the gallery closed its doors to make way for an £18 million refurbishment and will re-open in 2011.
